How many places can you ski on the East Coast and also take in incredible views of the sea? Just one! Camden Snow Bowl offers a vertical drop of 1,150 feet and its longest run is just over a mile. And all the while you can have views of the Atlantic Ocean. And it’s only 8 miles away from our Maine bed and breakfast.
The Snow Bowl has 20 runs for every level of skier and all end at the lodge. They’ve added night skiing and installed a new 4000 foot triple lift. They have a snow maker that can cover 80% of the mountain. You can rent equipment on site and ski lessons are offered for those needing a refresher course or are brand new to the sport.
Camden Snow Bowl offers more than downhill skiing, too. There are trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, lanes for fat biking, and a 400 foot toboggan chute (oh, go ahead, you know you’ve always wanted to try it!).
More of a spectator than a participant? That’s okay. Camden Snow Bowl is home to the U.S. National Toboggan Championships. The Championships are always held the first weekend of February. With speeds as fast as 45 mph, teams tear down the toboggan chute and are dumped out on frozen Hosmer Pond to the cheers and applause of a large crowd. The best part of the Championships? The costumes. All teams are invited to dress for the occasion and that means stepping up and going all out to represent their team name. So expect to see the “3 Meatballs”, the “Runaway Brides” (with veils flying!), and “Sled Man Walking” all vying for the fastest time, the biggest trophy, and most importantly: bragging rights!
