You’ve got 36 hours in Mid-Coast Maine and you need a little guidance on how to experience the real Maine. We’ve put together a 3-day itinerary that covers a lot of territory in a short time. It combines a little bit of adventure, a dash of local color, and a pinch of art and culture. Don’t worry, you’ll still have plenty of time to relax and enjoy Rockland’s fresh seafood and farm-to-table cuisine.
Day 1
Start your Mid-Coast Maine adventure on a leisurely paddle with Port Clyde Kayaking. Book the Deep Cove Excursion in advance and plan to arrive by 1:30 PM for a 2:00 PM launch out of Port Clyde Harbor. On this 1½ hour kayak trip, you’ll likely catch a glimpse of our local fishing fleet, pass by Marshall Point, and visit the resident pod of porpoises at Porpoise Cove. You may even see mothers surface-feeding with their juveniles if you’re lucky. This excursion is offered Tuesday through Saturday and is appropriate for all skill levels.
After your kayak adventure, head for the Berry Manor Inn in Rockland, Maine. Once you’ve checked in and unpacked, relax in your luxurious room, in the gardens in an Adirondack chair, or a comfy lounge chair on the front porch.
Later you can walk to the Rockland Brew Pub to quaff a local beer or two, then move on up the street for dinner at Rustica Cucina Italiana for some outstanding Italian cuisine.
End your evening at the Inn, where you’ll enjoy a great night’s sleep in preparation for another exciting day in Mid-Coast Maine.
Day 2
Start your day with a sumptuous breakfast at the Inn. You’ll feast on fresh fruit, homemade bread or pastry, and a sweet or savory main course. Feel free to linger in the garden chairs with your coffee before heading out for the day. No need to rush. It’s Maine, and you’re on vacation.
The coast of Maine is dotted with iconic lighthouses, so why not take a self-guided lighthouse driving tour this morning? Stop at Marshall Point Lighthouse, featured in Forrest Gump, located in the quaint fishing village of Port Clyde. Then mosey on to Owls Head Lighthouse before returning to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse that graces Rockland’s harbor.
When it’s time for lunch, stop at Claws for an authentic Maine experience – fresh seafood caught by local fishermen and served while overlooking Rockland Harbor. Follow it up with a tour of the Owls Head Transportation Museum. You’ll find interesting information and exhibits on all types of pre-1940 transportation.
Back at the Inn, perhaps it’s time to soak in your whirlpool tub before heading to dinner at Primo for a true farm-to-table dining experience. Add one of our “Special Enhancements” to your stay, and you’ll be greeted with rose petals, sparkling cider, and decadent chocolates in your room at the end of the night.
Day 3
Wake to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and head to the dining room for another great breakfast.
Before you set sail for home, stop by the Farnsworth Museum in downtown Rockland. On exhibit, you’ll find more than 15,000 incredible works of art. Check out the extensive collection of Wyeth paintings by NC, Andrew, and Jamie, along with the creations of sculptor Louise Nevelson.
Be sure to take a little of Maine with you as you make your way out of town. Stop by Jess’s Market for some fresh Maine lobster and exquisite Pemaquid mussels to savor at home.
