Updated May 2022. Sailing the coast of Maine must surely be one of life’s most thrilling adventures. Imagine the wind in the sails and an experienced sailor at the helm. Now, just sit back and enjoy the scenery. Fortunately, if you are not privy to a sailing vessel of your own, the mid-coast region of Maine is rife with all manner of watercraft to get you out on the ocean for a sailing adventure. And, our bed and breakfast in Rockland lies in the heart of mid-coast Maine’s hub for schooners, windjammers, sloops, and more.
Fair Winds and Following Seas
This blessing, shared among sailors for good luck, takes on new meaning when skimming across the waves under sail power alone. It’s a wind-in-your-hair, smile-on-your-face kind of experience.
Maine Windjammer Association
The Maine Windjammer Association, with a fleet of 9 schooners, offers 3, 4, and 6-day cruises out of Rockland and Camden harbors. Each vessel is individually owned and operated, and each cruise showcases the unique personalities of the ship and its captain. But the common thread among all ships is an opportunity to experience the coast of Maine in a truly authentic way.
You can expect to be under sail for about 6 hours on each day of your cruise. While many guests choose to sit back and enjoy the ride, you’ll also be offered the chance to take the helm, raise or lower the sails, and participate in other shipboard activities. No matter the length of the trip, you’ll certainly be treated to up-close and personal sightings of lighthouses, marine wildlife, seabirds, and spectacular coastal scenery. The wind determines your direction, and nights will find you anchored in a snug harbor. Best of all, meals onboard feature the freshest Maine seafood and genuine Downeast recipes, including a beachside lobster bake.
Sail the Rocky Coast of Maine
However, you don’t need to plan a multi-day trip to get out on the ocean in a schooner or windjammer. Many tour operators offer day sails to get a taste of what a longer excursion may entail. Contact any of these tour operators for more information and up-to-the-minute schedules.
