Rockland has been named one of the Top Adventure towns in Maine by National Geographic for several years because of the diversity of outdoor activities that are offered in this area. The opportunities to kayak or stand up paddle on the ocean or a lake for both the novice to the expert are plentiful.
Some of the prettiest waters for sea kayaking in Maine are in the Camden, Rockport and Rockland area. You will be able to paddle and see lighthouses, seals, marine birds, windjammers and the rocky coast of Maine. There are a number of businesses that offer group tours which include the kayak, wet suits, instructions and an expert guide. Most also rent single or double kayaks. Particularly for sea kayaking going with one of these businesses is recommended as they all have a lot of experience kayaking in the area and are well aware of the local currents, tides and weather. Most of the kayaking will begin in June and run through early October. Most of kayak outfitters offer 2 or 4 hour guided tours of Camden, Rockport and Rockland harbors or the quaint fishing village of Port Clyde and surrounding islands; nature tours for birding, seals and porpoises, full moon or sunset tours. Some of our favorites include Port Clyde Kayaks out of Port Clyde, Breakwater Kayaks in Rockland and Maine Sport Outfitters in Rockport and Camden locations. Port Clyde Kayaks offers tours in the quaint village of Port Clyde which will is a smaller more tranquil harbor than Rockland or Camden. Quite often you are kayaking with the seals and can watch the lobster boats come in with their hauls. Breakwater Kayaks specializes in natural-history tours where you will learn about the coast ecology, marine birds and wildlife, and rocky inter-tidal explorations to add to your sea kayaking experience. They also offer lake kayaking and harbor to harbor trips.
If you want to try out the fastest growing water sport in the US then get ready for stand up paddleboards or SUPS
as they are commonly called. Instruction, wet suits (if needed) and the boards are all available for the newbie and the experienced SUP paddler alike. There are private and group tours available on a lake or in the ocean. Paddleboarding is a great full body and core workout and a great way to explore Maine’s coastal waters. Port Clyde Kayaks have been offering Stand Up Paddleboarding for several years. Thornfinn Expeditions offers rentals, lessons for group or custom classes from lake training for the novice to race training for the more experienced. They were the founders of the Lobster SUP Cup – The Battle for Penobscot Bay which is a two-day 26 mile race scheduled for August 8-10th, 2014.
